Andersen Design + Visualization has been in business since 2008 but its origins and the experience of the owner go back much further. Our portfolio page showcases projects that we have worked on or are working on since ADV was founded but this page is dedicated to what came before.   If you would like to know more please take a few moments and scroll below to follow the chronological progression of how Andersen Design + Visualization came to be and how the owner Ian Andersen came to be passionate about Architecture. His resume is also available for download.

Jewelry Design

Ian's exposure to the world of design started at an early age with his father who is a jewelry designer and a goldsmith. At the age of 16 Ian began an apprenticeship with his father at Andersen Jewelry Design. He continued learning and practicing the art of jewelry design and goldsmithing through highschool and college with his most recent project the design and manufacture of an engagement ring (as seen in photo) for his fiance.

It has been said that architects are either painters or sculptors. Ian is a sculptor and has been thinking in 3D since a child.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo

Ian graduated cum laude from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 2004 with a Bachelor's in Architecture. During his time at one of the top undergraduate architecture schools in the country he received a hands-on education in architectural design, history, and practice as well as structural engineering.

The ciriculum at Cal Poly is based on the philosophy of The Bauhaus which put an emphasis on learning by action rather than pure theory. Instead of learning what design is or what to think, how to design and how to think is taught.

DIS, Copenhagen, Denmark

During his fourth year at Cal Poly Ian studied at the Danish International Study in Copenhagen Denmark. In addition to enjoying seeing Europe on a shoestring budget he was inspired by a lot of architecture both ancient and modern and was able to learn from one of the most design conscious cultures on the planet.

It was during Ian's time in Copenhagen that he grew to appreciate design for small spaces and doing the most with the fewest moves. Although ADV has large projects under its belt, doing the most with a small space and a small budget it our passion.

RRM Design Group

Ian worked for nearly four years at RRM design group in their education studio. During this time he worked on such projects as the new stadium for Cal Poly, the Cal Poly Marine Science Pier in Avila Beach and several fire stations throughout California. He also served as lead designer for the new Cayucos Elementary School campus during all four years at RRM.

It was during this time that Ian began to appreciate providing the best service possible to the firm's clients. During his last year at RRM he headed up several small projects and worked with the firm's clients extensively to help them acheive their goals and gain approvals from the numerous government agencies in our state.

Formation of AndersenDesignVis

After leaving RRM Design Group Ian found immediate use for his skills. Poiema Construction Company needed design assistance for a remodel. The project was on hold until a design for the guest bath and kitchen could be decided upon. He was able to set up on site the same day and walk the client through her bathroom later that day. Upon seeing the design she hired him to design the kitchen.

Since that day and the founding of Andersen Design and Visualization we are now the go-to designer for both Poiema and GJ Gardner Homes (formerly Vellum Design Build). We have also done a number of projects for the general public in California, Washington and Mexico.

On the Move

Andersen Design + Visualization still offers services on the Central Coast of California but the center of our operations are now in the Puget Sound Region of Washington State.

Ian's roots are in Kitsap County and his return here offers exciting new opportunities in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. At this point in time we are offering our services in Kitsap and Mason Counties, however, we have also done work in Bellingham and are pursuing work in the greater Puget Sound region.

Please check back periodically in the projects section of our website as we add work from this area. If you live in Western Washington and are interested in designing or remodeling a home please contact us.
